Mom's Sushi Experience

My mom has never appreciated the satisfaction of true Japanese cuisine: sushi! Her idea of sushi was a California Roll purchased at the local supermarket. No wonder her association of sushi was a negative one. When my dad leaves town for business, we take advantage of dining out because of our dislike of dish washing. I thought that this was the ideal opportunity to treat my mom to sushi.

We ventured to my beloved Japanese restaurant in town…Taiko Sushi. I have been a satisfied costumer for years because of their specialty rolls, calm atmosphere, and friendly service. If you are from Sacramento, then you know that Mikuni and Tokyo Fro’s have the corner market on sushi. If you want good sushi, then dine at these well-known establishments. If you desire the same great experience as well as a (let’s face it) cheaper menu, then Taiko is your restaurant.

Mom and I ordered the special dinner for two which included: miso soup, edamame, salad, vegetable and shrimp tempura, sesame chicken, rice, spicy tuna roll, and two specialty rolls. We chose the Mount Fuji (a chicken tempura roll with avocado, green onion, and spicy mayo) and the Bay Scallop (scallop, crab, salmon, avocado covered in garlic mayo and roe) for $29.00. The Mount Fuji is fully cooked while the Bay Scallop contains raw fish.

Well…my mom wouldn’t allow me to take a photo of her first sushi experience. I think she feared that the photo would be of her spitting a morsel of fish onto the table. Despite her apprehension, she thoroughly enjoyed the Bay Scallop roll!  Here's a photo of her after the dinner...she doesn't look too disgusted :) She commented that the flavor was delectable, but the texture was slimy. That’s sushi for you though! I asked her if she would try sushi again. She said as long as there is no eel! Now that’s something I still can’t consume. Maybe we will have to break that barrier sometime.
